Mold Growing on Clothes and Shoes
It may surprise you to know that one of the most common complaints we hear is mold has started growing on my clothes and shoes. This usually comes as a surprise to people as it often happens in situations where there is not an apparent water damage. If this type of thing is happening, it is likely that your residence has a humidity/moisture problem that has caused the mold growth.
Here is a likely scenario for how mold has started to grow on your clothes. The property in question has probably had an extended period of time with high humidity for some reason or another. This creates a moisture problem and gives the low levels of mold spores commonly in the air a chance to thrive and colonize. Closets full of clothes are commonly the first place people notice the start of mold growth because there is oil from you skin on the garments. They are also dark and have even more stagnant air than that of the rest of the property. We actually see this on shoes more than anything as they don’t get washed regularly like other materials in the closet.
Since this is not a typical mold problem that you would think of like a water damage, it needs to be handled differently. Now that there is visible mold growth, it is very likely that you have at least slightly elevated conditions. The only way to determine just how bad the problem is would be to test, which we obviously recommend. If the air is only slightly elevated we can offer steps you can try first to remove the problem without professional help. However, testing does show a serious problem a mold remediation company should be brought in to handle the work. All visible mold needs to be cleaned and air scrubbers run to filter out excess mold spores from the air.
